What Surprised Me Most About Yoga: My Journey Through the Yoga In Depth Course

When I signed up for the Yoga In Depth course, I wasn't sure if I wanted to teach. I just knew I wanted more yoga in my life. I thought I knew a lot about yoga, but it had a few surprises in store!

Discovering That History Can Be Helpful

One of the biggest surprises was discovering the history of yoga and seeing how useful it still is today. We looked at old texts called the Yoga Sutras, which felt less like dusty school books and more like advice straight out of a great modern self-help book.

For instance, looking at Sutra 1:33, the teaching is all about keeping the mind calm and happy by focusing on four things:

  • Being friendly to those who are happy

  • Being kind to those who are struggling

  • Feeling true joy for the success of others

  • Staying calm and balanced around people who are difficult

This completely changed how I think. Whenever I feel a bit of envy, it helps me realize I am usually just projecting my own worries, and it taught me how to genuinely celebrate other people instead.

Letting Go of Perfect Poses

Another major thing happened when we looked closely at the postures. I used to spend all my energy trying to make a pose look perfect because I thought there was only one right way to do it.

The course gave us a chance to explore how our bodies work and why everyone is built differently. My hips, for example, just do not move a certain way! But by learning how to change postures to fit my own body, I found ways to move so that my knees don't hurt anymore. I finally stopped worrying about looking like everyone else, and I am much happier with where my body is right now.

A Warm, Friendly Group

The group experience has been so lovely. The teachers are wonderfully welcoming and make you feel completely at home. On course days, some of us go out for lunch together while others stay at the studio to chat and eat, making it feel like a real community.

I never imagined I would be rolling out my mat for ten minutes before work just to breathe and stretch. I am still not sure if I will ever do teacher training, but I am so happy to have this deeper relationship with yoga now.
